Dementia Friendly America
The City of St. Charles was recently recognized as a Dementia Friendly City, a designation awarded after several years of work. In June of 2023, our first responders were trained in how to approach those with dementia and were engaged in a virtual program that simulates what it feels like to cope with some of the challenges experienced by those with various forms of sensory and memory loss.
As an ongoing project, we are encouraging all people who engage with the public to become Dementia Friends. This involves taking an on-line class to educate yourself on the best ways to approach those who may be suffering from memory loss. Click here for information on Dementia Friends. AARP
The designation of “Age-Friendly City” is awarded to those cities who have made particular efforts to become more welcoming to seniors. St. Charles is one of the few cities that has earned this designation.
AARP has an extensive web site that offers free literature, videos, and links to classes in our area. (https://www.aarp.org/)
